Hedgehogs
This quartet of “Hedgehogs” is in reality a species of fungus that I have been unable to yet identify, so if there are any budding mycologists out there, help would be appreciated.
NOTE: Thanks to Carla Jandelle Petters the species has been identified as Lycoperdon, a family of Puffball Fungi. Further research will finish the identification.
Carla’s gallery can be found here .
Found and photographed along a track at Swan’s Crossing the Kerewong State Forest , west of Kew , NSW, Australia, right at the end of autumn.
This photograph (and more), are THE best fungi shots I have made so far. I was out with Port Macquarie Panthers Camera Club’s most knowledgeable and experienced fungi hunter and used long exposures with natural light for almost every shot.
Fuji S9600: Macro, f/8 @ 1.1sec, Tripod, Timer, Natural light.
Lightroom 1.1 & Photoshop CS3.
Visit the Fungi & Lichen collection in my BubbleSite Gallery for more fabulous fungi and likeable lichen.
UPDATE: 8-9-09
My spiky puffballs were awarded a MERIT in the Port Macquarie Panthers Camera Club’s August 2009 Competition in the Open Digital Colour Section.
UPDATE: 2-10-09
My spiky puffballs have WON the Fungilicious Group’s Puffballs, Earth Stars, Hard-skinned Puffballs or Birds-nest Fungi Challenge.
Enjoy!
